George W Bush has written a biography of "a great servant, statesman, and father": his own.

The volume will bring the Bush political dynasty head to head on the bookshelf battleground with the Clintons, after Hillary Clinton published her own book, Hard Choices, earlier this summer.

The 43rd president of America announced on Thursday that his "personal biography" of George Bush Sr, the 41st president of America, would be published on 11 November this year. Crown, his publisher, said it would have a first print run of one million hardbacks in the US.

"Forty-three men have served as president of the United States. Countless books have been written about them. But never before has a president told the story of his father, another president, through his own eyes and in his own words," said Crown. The book will cover "the entire scope" of the elder Bush's life and career, said the publisher, "including his service in the Pacific during the second world war, his pioneering work in the Texas oil business, and his political rise".

Away from politics, it will consider "the warm, decent man known best by his family", with George W Bush writing about "his father's influence on him throughout his own life, from his childhood in west Texas to his early campaign trips with his father", said Crown.

Bush himself added in a statement: "George HW Bush is a great servant, statesman, and father. I loved writing the story of his life, and I hope others enjoy reading it."

The author's previous book, Decision Points, was published in 2010. Exploring his 14 "most critical and historic decisions", it is the bestselling presidential memoir of all time, according to Crown, which said it had sold more than three million copi2es in the US, in all formats. Crown publisher Maya Mavjee called his new book a "heartfelt, intimate and illuminating" portrait of an "extraordinary life of service to country and family".

Earlier this summer, George Bush Sr marked his 90th birthday with a skydive. His son, meanwhile, has taken up painting.
