Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan – review

Two Boys Kissing is by David Levithan, and is probably suitable for readers aged 13+. The book centres around several characters, and all their individual stories, and how they all weave together. It follows Peter and Neil, a couple, navigating through the ups and downs of a relationship; Craig and Harry, two boys attempting to set a world record for the longest kiss; Avery and Ryan, who have only just met; Cooper, who is alone, and a little confused. I found it a little confusing in the beginning to keep up with all the characters and their stories, especially with the changing person (or maybe I just did because I have an awful memory). Levithan covered not only the positives of a relationship, but the not so good parts, as well as homophobia, and people's opinions.

I truly love this book. Like all of David Levithan's work, it's funny, witty, deep and romantic. It's really refreshing to have gay characters that didn't fit into the typical gay stereotype that YA novels always seem to feature. Also, to have a non-heterosexual love story, is a much needed, and much appreciated change from the classic boy–meets–girl story. 'Two Boys Kissing' is brilliantly written, and made me giggle, smile and fall head over heels. Expect to see a lot more of Levithan, as I believe that Levithan is set to be one of the leaders in YA novels. I highly recommend this book and I have a mile long queue of friends waiting to borrow it! I can't wait to read whatever David releases next!
