Lola Rose by Jacqueline Wilson – review

Pheebz: 'I loved this book because it's such a bittersweet story, with lots of happy and sad bits when you least expect them'

Lola Rose is about a girl called Jayni, her brother Kenny and their mum. When the story begins, they are all living with Jayni and Kenny's father, who is often violent to the mother.

One day, Jayni's mum wins a lot of money with a lottery ticket. She only tells Jayni and Kenny about the money, not their father. Unfortunately he finds out about the win and is so furious, he hits Jayni and her mum and storms out of the house. Jayni and her mum are so shocked by his violence, Jayni's mum decides to use the money to take Jayni and Kenny to London to escape from the father.

They take the train to London and when they arrive they book into a hotel. Jayni has an idea: they should change their names so that the father won't be able to find them. Jayni becomes Lola Rose, Kenny becomes Kendall and their mother becomes Miss Lucky. The next morning, they decide to explore the city and they have a wonderful time together.

Soon, the family moves into an old house, which they start to do up. Also, Miss Lucky meets a student called Jake. They fall in love and Jake comes to live with them, but Jayni's lovely new life is about to be turned upside down...

I loved this book because it's such a bittersweet story, with lots of happy and sad bits when you least expect them. It's definitely a book for teenagers, however, because there are some difficult subjects discussed, such as cancer and domestic violence. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did!
