Cleopatra

Sleep No More by Aprilynne Pike – review

Cleopatra: 'This book has made me doubly sure that I don't want to be able to see into the future'

The book is set in America in the present time and is about a teenage girl, Charlotte, who has the ability to see into the future. Only her aunt is aware of this fact because she too has this ability. She needs to keep her visions to herself, because if others knew about her power they would make her change the future. This can be quite dangerous, as by altering future negative consequences are possible, such as changing one person's death for another.

A girl at her school is killed, an act which Charlotte foresees but does not warn the girl in advance as this would cause her power to be revealed. Her power is still discovered by someone, who starts sending her text messages saying they know what she can do and asking why she did nothing to stop the girl dying. She eventually meets the person sending these messages and he teaches her how to change the future. Initially she trusts him, but when she begins to get visions of herself killing people she starts questioning the person who is teaching her, wondering if he has her best interests at heart.

The book has made me doubly sure that I don't want to be able to see into the future. It would far too complicated and I would just mess things up. I also would feel bad with so much responsibility.
