Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson – review

Before Sloane, Emily didn't go to parties, she barely talked to guys, and she didn't do anything crazy. Enter Sloane, social tornado and the best kind of best friend — someone who yanks you out of your shell.

But right before what should have been an epic summer, Sloane just … disappears. No note. No calls. No texts. No Sloane. There's just a random to-do list with thirteen bizarre tasks that Emily would never try. But what if they can lead her to Sloane?

Apple picking at night? Okay, easy enough.
Dance until dawn? Sure. Why not?
Kiss a stranger? Um…
Go Skinny Dipping? Wait, what?

First things first: I LOVED this book. This is the perfect contemporary book to read during the summer, which I did, as it really isn't that heavy or confusing. It's a nice and easy read. Emily, the main character, is one of my favourites, mainly because I connected and empathised with her so much. She, much like, is extremely awkward (in the beginning, anyway) but, unlike me, changes a lot during the course of the book to become much braver.

(Spoiler alert. Don't read this paragraph if you haven't read the book.) I also really liked Frank and Emily's relationship because Frank is a really unlikely love interest compared to the generic hotties you usually get (you know, like Jace and Tobias, the ones with the really dark mysterious pasts). One thing that was ever so slightly cliched was the fact that Frank's parents were splitting up but hey, you can't have everything.

EMILY'S FAMILY! Oh my god, I fell. In. LOVE. This is a completely new idea that Morgan Matson thought up, and I loved it! Living Room Theatre made me laugh so much! (Wanna know what I'm yammering on about. READ IT.) I also really liked Sloane, even though you only got to know her through a few memories incorporated into the book, which I thought was a clever way of getting a back story on Emily.

Overall, I'd rate this book 4.5 out of 5. Read if you liked things like We Were Liars, or If I Stay.
