Game of Thrones star Richard Madden will play gamekeeper Oliver Mellors in Jed Mercurio’s new adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover for BBC1.

Madden, who played Robb Stark in the HBO fantasy series, will star opposite Holliday Grainger (The Borgias) as Lady Chatterley and James Norton, who starred opposite Sarah Lancashire in BBC1’s Happy Valley, as her war-wounded husband Sir Clifford Chatterley.

Mercurio, fresh from the success of the second series of BBC2’s Line of Duty, will also direct the 90-minute drama, which is being made by Sherlock producer Hartswood Films. It will air as one of a series of classic 20th century literature adaptations next year.

The BBC announced three new drama commissions at the Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival on Friday including supernatural period drama series The Living and the Dead, a six-part series by Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham, the co-creators of Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes.

BBC1 controller Charlotte Moore said: “It’s a really exciting thriller which will terrify you, set in a community on the cusp of industrialisation with a combine harvester that ploughs through the field and wakes the dead.”

Set at the close of the 19th century, Pharoah and Graham said: “We are as excited about this show as anything since Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes – we want it to be moving, tender, sensual ... and very, very scary.”

Other new BBC1 dramas include From Darkness, a four-part police drama by Katie Baxendale (Sugar Rush), and A Song For Jenny, a factual drama exploring a mother’s response to her daughter’s murder in the 7 July London bombings.

The 75-minute film will star Emily Watson as Julie Nicholson, whose daughter was killed in the bombing at Edgware Road tube station. It is written by Frank McGuinness, whose credits include BBC1’s acclaimed A Short Day in Switzerland, starring Julie Walters.
