The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton

DavidTennantFan23: 'It is a bittersweet and haunting story about the Roux family – a family which has been punished by the consequences of foolish love for centuries'

I admit, I was uncertain at the beginning of this book whether I would like it or not – it seemed, in the first few chapters, that the plot was a little random and I could not see how the story would unfold. But as the author travelled through generations of Ava Lavender's family, at the very end all loose ends the plot had created had been tied together.

The book itself is very different and unusual to many popular YA novels. It is a bittersweet and haunting story about the Roux family – a family which has been punished by the consequences of foolish love for centuries. Ava Lavender, a descendant of this family, is a girl born with wings, and ventures away from her family to learn and discover a new world that is undiscovered, with her peers. But, is she a victim of this foolish love too? As she grows, she discovers and learns the true meaning of love- and what sacrifices will be made for it.

I definitely recommend this book! I absolutely loved it, and I would recommend it to anyone 13+ – the story itself revolves around magic, mystery, and the pain of love. As the characters grow and change, you really do feel their emotions through what they go through. I think that sometimes I was unsure of the plot line of the book, but apart from that, I cannot find any other faults! I would rate this book eight out of ten!
