Where the Rock Splits the Sky by Philip Webb – review

Sophiescribe: 'This book was perfect! Part classic Western, part sci-fi and part dystopian'

Imagine a world that has stopped spinning; a world bathed in constant sunlight with whole continents covered in ice; a world where danger from alien visitors lies around every corner. Megan lives in this world, in a tiny American town on the edge of The Zone, a magical wilderness where nowhere and no-one is safe.

Megan's father has been missing since the Visitation, the day when the Visitors arrived and the moon was knocked right out of the sky. Most of those abducted are presumed dead, but Megan knows that her father is different. Together with Luis, the farrier's son and Kelly, someone who has returned from abduction from a floating town, she sets off to find her father and set the world spinning once more. But little does she know what terrible decisions await her...

This book was perfect! Part classic Western, part sci-fi and part dystopian, Webb creates a vibrant and real world, filled with colourful and exciting characters - all with very different personalities. The action was truly gripping but there were also some more human moments with Megan learning valuable lessons about friendship and who she really is.

The only negative (and this is just me being really picky) was that, though we got into Megan's head really easily, her speech was somewhat lacking in character compared to that of the others. It sometimes didn't really seem like the same person whose thoughts we'd just been reading about.

My favourite character was definitely Kelly! She was really funny and though I disliked her at some points, she was truly an individual at all points. Luis was also great in the way he mixed up Spanish and English words in the same sentence - it made him seem more real and different to other characters.

I absolutely loved the cover! With so many books now having black covers, a girl's face and/or one word titles, this was refreshing. It's well designed and stands out from the rest of the books on my shelf!

The plot was well thought-out and had a feeling of completion, even though it did end on a bit of a cliffhanger - I hate novels that do that! OK, so the author can turn it into a series if it sells well but come on! Having said that, I'm gripped so...
The story was unlike anything I've read, perhaps due to the unusual and very original combination of genres which were interwoven seamlessly. I could not recommend this book enough more to anyone and everyone who wants a brilliant, unique and enjoyable read, whether child or adult. It's in my top five books this year and I'll be searching out Webb's other novel, Six Days ASAP!
