The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater – review

Molly, Millennium RIOT Reader: 'I can't wait for the sequel'

The Raven Boys is the first instalment of The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater.

It is set in modern day Henrietta in America, and is about a girl called Blue whose mother is a psychic. Blue is told that if she kisses her true love (who she has also been told she will meet this year) that he will die.

His name is Gansey. He's a rich boy who goes to the expensive Henrietta private school who is obsessed with finding the ley line (an invisible, underground, energy line) and finding a centuries-old, comatose King.

When they meet, Gansey and his schoolmates all befriend Blue in her promise to help them find the ley line.

The Raven Boys has a brilliant plot and I love Stiefvater's writing style and how easily she slips from one character's perspective to another.

The characters are intriguing and complex from the start, but how they develop through the book is what is really fantastic.

The plot twists in the book are brilliantly thought out, and the magical and mythological parts of the story are really well evoked in a modern setting.

All round, I love this book and I can't wait for the sequel.
