Safah

The Geography of You and Me by Jennifer E. Smith – review

Safah: 'It was like Oreo-flavoured ice cream or melted chocolate kind-of-brilliant'

Being stuck in an elevator, it's never the best situation. But when Lucy and Owen find themselves trapped in the dark and heat of New York between four metal walls, being trapped isn't so bad - not when one fleeting moment can finally set you free.

After a night looking at the stars that could at last be seen because of the blackout, Owen and Lucy are separated, sent on separate, seemingly endless journeys across the world with only postcards to remind each other of the time they shared. But after all the pain, the loss and a journey so long it felt like a forever, they realise that sometimes home is not a place, no fixed position, but a person, and a moment that can never be forgotten.

This book was so readable, so meaningful and so beautifully written. It was actually the first that I've ever used tags in and I ended up tagging about 40 different places because it was THAT kind of brilliant. It was like Oreo-flavoured ice cream or melted chocolate kind-of-brilliant.
The characterisation was pretty great and I loved how this book was not so much about romance, but about a journey in life to find yourself and how love can guide you. Looking at this book it does appear eye-rollingly cheesy, but it actually wasn't. It was sweet and it was heart breaking in moments and the conclusion was realistic - it wasn't the kind of "and they all lived happily ever after" ending, but it still made me smile. While I felt like it maybe took a little while for any suspense to kick in it was still really well formed and the plot was so great. The minor characters and background of the main characters was also so enjoyable to read and I found Owen's story so refreshing and heart warming. His relationship with his dad as they overcame Owen's mother's death was particularly affecting. I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy contemporary romance or just want to give it a go!
