Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell – review

PetrovaFossil: 'Sophie's opinion on this has now made me change my own; it takes a very powerful novel to do that'

Rooftoppers is all about a young girl named Sophie who lives with her guardian (though strictly speaking, they are not her guardian!) – but all she wants is to find her mum. However, the only clue she had is an address she finds in the cello case that she is floating in when she is found at sea! Rushing to find the address, she and her guardian Charles travel to Paris. On the run from the authorities, she takes to the roof tops where she meets Matteo – a boy who lives on top of a roof.
I love this book and can completely understand why it was nominated for so many awards! The idea was very original and the language and descriptions (particularly of Sophie) was outstanding. However, my favourite part of the book was how I warmed to Sophie. She is such a likeable person, in that she is different from all the other girls of her era - she wears trousers instead of skirts. Something Charles says has become a favourite saying of mine: 'Never ignore a possible'. Sophie's opinion on this has now made me change my own; it takes a very powerful novel to do that to people and I think this is why it was nominated! I give this book 10/10 – but I can't say if it will win yet as I haven't read any others!
