Wolverine trailer shows superhero giving yakuza claws for thought

Superhero film The Wolverine takes Hugh Jackman to Japan in the latest big-screen comic-book adaptation

The first full-length trailer for The Wolverine is online, showing Hugh Jackman's adamantium-clawed superhero weakened and fighting for his life in Japan.

Directed by Walk the Line's James Mangold, this is the mutant Marvel comics character's sixth time on the big screen (including a cameo in recent prequel X-Men: First Class) and second full-length solo film. Critics were unimpressed by 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but it was a box-office hit nonetheless, taking $373m (£246m) worldwide.

The Wolverine borrows a storyline from a popular 1982 comic book by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller. Jackman battles yakuza boss Shingen Yashida (Hiroyuki Sanada) and the Silver Samurai (Will Yun Lee), a fearsome warrior with an electrified suit of armour. Unlike its predecessor, the story is set after the events of 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, with Wolverine alone and vulnerable following the superhero ensemble's disintegration. The trailer shows him losing his self-healing power as part of what appears to be a devious conspiracy.

The Wolverine, which also stars Tao Okamoto and Svetlana Khodchenkova, is due in UK cinemas on 24 July and in the US two days later. Studio 20th Century Fox will be hoping there is no leak of footage such as that which damaged the box-office potential of X-Men Origins: Wolverine four years ago. Then, a full-length version of the film – complete except for minor special effects work – was released online a month prior to the $150m (£99m) movie's release.
