The book is about a young soldier from the First World War. He is a telegraph engineer, he has a best friend called Rob who is in the infantry and another friend called Alf. In the story he goes to war in France to lay cables for communication.

The soldier does not enjoy his time in the trenches because it is muddy and cramped and he gets lice whilst he is there. He likes staying at the camp because he goes to a cafe and meets his best friend there.
