Less than a fortnight after Jason Cowley departed for the New Statesman, Granta magazine has appointed its first female editor.

The deputy editor, Alex Clark, will take over from Cowley in September. Cowley quit to become New Statesman editor just seven months into his tenure at Granta.

Clark also writes the "My So-Called Week" column in the Observer review section.

A former deputy literary editor of the Observer, she has also worked for the Daily Telegraph's books section.

"I am thrilled to be the new editor of Granta, a magazine that has been central to my reading for longer than I can remember," Clark said.

"I look forward to drawing on many years' experience to bring to it energetic and original writing of the highest quality - both building on the traditions that have brought the magazine such renown and taking it in entirely unexpected and rewarding new directions."

Sigrid Rausing, the magazine's backer, added: "We are extremely happy to make this announcement, not least because she will be the first woman editor of Granta. Whilst this is not in any sense the reason for her appointment, it is still cause for celebration."

The Granta managing director, David Graham, said: "Alex Clark has been a hugely impressive deputy - demonstrating clear and intelligent literary judgment and calm leadership."
