Higher education institutes in Wales continued their expansion of research today with the publication of a book demonstrating good practice in the field.

The book, Working for Wales - Innovation and Knowledge Exploitation in Higher Education, was published by the chancellors and vice-chancellors' representative body, Higher Education for Wales.

Launched in the Welsh assembly today, the book shows how universities are contributing to the new strategy in higher education.

Jane Davidson, Welsh minister for education and lifelong learning, launched a new strategy at the beginning of March to encourage "collaboration, widening access and knowledge exploitation" in Welsh HE institutes.

The book draws together examples of how universities are contributing to the economy of Wales by supporting businesses, establishing spin-off Companies and collaborating and carrying out applied research.

Ms Davidson said: "I hope that Working for Wales will help people understand not only the value of the contribution research undoubtedly makes to the health and economy of Wales, but also to the continuing development of our culture and communities."

Professor Sir Adrian Webb, chairman of HEW, said: "Wales is the home of research excellence with 75% of researchers in Welsh higher education institutions working in departments producing work of international excellence.

"The excellence in research and teaching enables Welsh higher education institutions to make a major contribution to the economy of Wales and its international competitiveness."
