Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw

This is the first of a joint venture to produce plays between Naxos and Oneword, the station devoted to audiobooks. Here is the author's original, not the version tweaked by the play's first London director for Eliza to marry Professor Higgins, which so enraged Shaw.

Anton Lesser is a light tenor Higgins whose shrill peevishness might have found better counterpoint with a Pickering more in the bass register than Geoffrey Palmer, who does not convince as an Edwardian Indian army officer. As Eliza, Lucy Whybrow nips our lacrymal ducts with some real pathos. Though it's uneven, this Pygmalion heralds a series to be eagerly anticipated.
