The inference is that you would never do anything as boring as visit only one city at a time, so you can pluck Volume IV from the purple box set and use it to help you perform a whirlwind tour of Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo. They make useful guides for the business or frequent traveller. Dispensing with a lot of the in-depth knowledge and historical background of other guidebooks, the information on public transport is equally scant. But the entries for a small selection of upmarket hotels and restaurants are concise and informative; a charming two-word potted guide to each venue, such as 'Italian, trendy' or 'European fusion' means that you can't go wrong as you glide from cab to restaurant to hotel.
