Dope director Rick Famuyiwa has been picked to take on DC superhero adventure The Flash, after the previous director dropped out.
According to Deadline, Warner Bros chose the film-maker to take on the project after he impressed with his Sundance hit. The title role will be filled by We Need to Talk About Kevin star Ezra Miller, who will next be seen in JK Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The character was briefly seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and will next appear in The Justice League Part One.
The Flash was originally set to be directed by Seth Grahame-Smith, who has also written the script, but he recently left the project over creative differences. Grahame-Smith is known for writing Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
It’s one of many interconnected films from the DC universe scheduled to follow on from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Despite the poor reviews, the superhero team-up made $871m worldwide. The next planned release is Suicide Squad this summer, followed by Wonder Woman and The Justice League Part One next year.
It marks the first big-budget project for Famuyiwa, whose credits also include romantic comedy Brown Sugar and the HBO political drama Confirmation, starring Kerry Washington. Dope, a comedy about a trio of high-school friends in downtown Los Angeles who come into possession of a stash of drugs, was one of the most talked about titles at 2015’s Sundance film festival.
