The fantasy prequel The Huntsman: Winter’s War looks set to become the latest high-profile box-office bomb of 2016 after grossing $20.1m (£13.9m) from its opening weekend in North America. The follow-up to 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman debuted in second place, while the Disney remake The Jungle Book continued to show off its big beast status in top spot.

Winter’s War, which stars Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain and Chris Hemsworth, has received terrible reviews. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw labelled the film, which had a 17% rating on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, a “dreary sub-franchise fairytale product”. Bradshaw added: “It takes its audience to a zen state beyond pointlessness, an incoherent CGI world created by an army of execs at a million dire meetings, grimly hashing out the ways in which the profitability of the first film could be continued and maximised by pinching plot points from Frozen, and set-dressing from Narnia and Middle-earth.”

The Jungle Book topped $500m at the global box office this weekend and scored a roaring $60.8m in its second week. It has now grossed $191.5m at the North American box office in just two weeks.

Two other new movies made the top 10 this week. Compadres, a Mexican-American action comedy about a disgruntled cop forced to work with a teenage hacker to track down his wife’s killer, was in ninth spot with $1.4m. And the comedy drama A Hologram for the King, starring Tom Hanks, snuck in at No 10 with $1.2m in receipts.

The Guardian’s Nigel M Smith described it as “a meandering mess of half-baked storylines that amount to little”. Tom Tykwer’s movie centres on a desperate US businessman who arrives in Saudi Arabia hoping to sell a holographic teleconferencing system to the titular monarch.
