The evil wizard Malvel is dead, but the kingdom of Avantia is in danger again - this time from Malvel's evil son, Maximus. Maximus steals the two golden gauntlets. Tom, who is Master of the Beasts, manages to get one of them back, but with the other gauntlet Maximus can control one of the beasts of Avantia and make it go to battle against another. A new hero, called Sam, has been chosen to fight Maximus. Sam is helped by his friend Lara and he rides Epos to fight Ferno, the beast controlled by Maximus.

I have read lots of the Beast Quest books, and it was nice to have a new hero as there have been so many books with Tom as the hero. It was also great to have a new bad guy. Maximus has a fire whip as his weapon which was really cool. I thought he was a better villain than Malvel because he's out in the open lots and takes part in more of the action.

This was a very good adventure story, full of exciting fights. I will definitely carry on reading this series, I can't wait for the next story! 5 stars
