Lily Alone by Jacqueline Wilson – review

Lemondrop: 'The first part was scary and exciting at the same time'

Lily Alone is the story of an 11-year-old girl left alone with her two sisters and brother when their mum goes on holiday to Spain with her new boyfriend.

I really liked the first part of the book when Lily's mum goes out and tells Lily she's just going out for a drink and will be back soon. But Lily waits all night for her and her mum comes back at five in the morning. This was scary and exciting at the same time.

Another part of the book that I liked was the bit after the mum goes off to Spain. Lily takes her brothers and sisters to the park to go camping. They don't take enough food, so they have to search for their own food. They end up stealing food from a house and that was quite shocking.

The part I didn't like was the last chapter. Their mum comes back but ends up at the police station and their sister, Bliss, ends up in hospital. I won't give the reason why! I did find the ending a bit boring.

My favourite character was Pixie, the three-year old sister. She is cheeky, friendly and lively. However, I didn't like this book as much as other Jacqueline Wilson books.
