We were looking forward to Sam Lloyd's latest book Yucky Mucky Manners, as Calm Down, Boris! is a big favourite in our house. But don't expect the same again: Yucky Mucky Manners isn't a touchy-feely hand-puppet extravaganza like Boris; it's a conventional picture book, brightly coloured but quite simplistically drawn, that takes a journey through a jungle full of farting, burping, pooing animals behaving badly.
Sadly we didn't get much further than that, because a stony-faced Hugh firmly shut the book on page 2! It just didn't appeal to him, and at 16 months he's still at the age where those yucky mucky manners are totally natural and haven't yet become rude (and funny). Hugh just doesn't get it yet, but to be fair, the age guidance on the back does say 2+ and I imagine older children will find it a riot. Parents of a more genteel sensibility might not approve, but if you've spent this much time with the farting, burping poo machines that are your babies, Yucky Mucky Manners shouldn't faze you one bit!
So while it's not for babies, kids who are slightly older and more sophisticated (or less, depending on your point of view) will enjoy the cheeky rhymes and pictures.
