I'm looking for a good book about the internet, something that doesn't go into too much technical detail but is akin to popular science books.

It's a long time since we had general introductions to the internet, but Preston Gralla's How the Internet Works is a well-illustrated guide to the underlying technologies and protocols. Perhaps it is a bit too technical, but you can see an extended preview of pages at Google Book Search. Much smaller and more down-to-earth is The Rough Guide to the Internet by Peter Buckley and Duncan Clark.
