Inkheart by Cornelia Funke – review

Hannah3111999: 'This to me is simply a very dramatized way of showing the truth behind reading'

I found Inkheart by Cornelia Funke fully enjoyable. A particular aspect of the book that I enjoyed was, although dramatized, the way the author portrayed both pros and cons of reading. For example, if you read a horror, the book may be entertaining (the pro) but the monstrous characters may stay with you, scarring you like the dark would when your imagination runs free (the con). The way Cornelia Funke portrayed this in her book was by expressing the main character's love and adoration for books, but having the downfall of the awful and cruel characters from a book being real and living in her world. The cause of this incident occurred 9 years ago due to Mo (Meggie's father). This to me is simply a very dramatized way of showing the truth behind reading.

I particularly liked the vast variety of characters, each of which was extremely individual. My favorite character, the sweet innocent 12 year old Meggie, is very different from the ruthless stone-hearted Capricorn, who lives only to cast misery upon all who cross his path. The story as a whole is adventurous and exciting and extremely well written, in my opinion.

Although not related to the actual story line, I couldn't help but like the way there were small book extracts at the beginning of every chapter. It made the book feel more personal and inevitably offered books which, based on the extract, would be worth reading.
