The Unbelievable Top Secret Diary of Pig by Emer Stamp – review

JDBookClub: 'We liked climbing into a pig's mind because we haven't done that before'

The first thing we noticed was that, instead of being in proper English, this book is written in Pigish (pig language) For example: it starts with, "Me I is pig." Some adults might get upset about this but we don't care because this book is definitely for children. It's to make us laugh and have fun reading.

That's why we read books, to entertain ourselves, as well as to learn words we didn't understand before and stuff like that. We liked climbing into a pig's mind because we haven't done that before.

The book is set on a farm. It's about a pig named Pig. His best friend is a duck named Duck and his worst enemies are the chickens. He thinks the farmer is his friend, but then makes a horrible discovery: The farmer is evil and is going to kill him and then going to eat him! We felt sorry for the pig, but for most of us our opinions about eating pigs were not changed, though one of us did begin to think it may not be fair to eat animals.

The pig escapes from the farm in the weirdest way. His enemies, the chickens, have built a rocket – they call it "trocket" because it's half made from a tractor – for Pig the pig to escape into space!

The drawings and cartoons through the book make it really funny. We prefer books with drawings so you can look at the pictures while you read. Pig's character is so funny, he reminds us a bit of Mr Bean!

This book makes us feel we could write a book ourselves and some of us have started writing our own secret diaries as kittens and pandas. You could read this from 6 to 11 years old. This would make a good cartoon or film. It's a relaxing book to read.

What do we give it out of 10? We give it between 9 out of 10 and 10 out of 10. We would recommend it to others because it's so funny.
