Prince Caspian

The Children of Noisy Village by Astrid Lindgren – review

Prince Caspian: 'The children have lots of fun exploring, having adventures and making dens'

In this book there are six children who live in the same village. They live in three houses called North Farm, South Farmhouse and Middle Farmhouse. The three girls play together while the boys (who are older) go off on their own. Some of them are brothers and sisters, but Olle lives on his own (although he has a dog called Svipp to keep him company). The children have lots of fun exploring, having adventures and making dens.

My favourite part was the story of how Olle got his dog, which came from a shoe-maker called Mr Gentle, who wasn't at all gentle. He used to be really mean to his dog, and the dog was all dirty and grumpy, growling and barking at everyone. Then one day, Mr Gentle hurt his ankle and Olle asked if he could look after Svipp until Mr Gentle was better. Mr Gentle thought that the dog would bite Olle, but by being kind and caring, Olle trained Svipp to become a much nicer dog and they became good friends. But when Mr Gentle recovered he wanted Svipp back and Olle was so sad that his father bought the dog for him. After that Svipp joins in the adventures with the other Noisy Village children.
