Buffy The Vampire Slayer, for those of you not in the know, was a classic TV series which ran from 1997 to 2003 about a supernaturally-empowered young woman named Buffy who danced with rabbits (cross this out) slayed vampires. This comic is set between the end of season three of Buffy and the beginning of season four. Spoilers for both will appear in this review, and also some spoilers for earlier seasons.
So.
The comic deals with the disembodied spirit of the Mayor possessing various dead bodies in an attempt to wreak revenge on Buffy. The story is well written and retains the feeling of the Buffy TV series, with all the characters coming across much as they do on TV. The real star of the story (much as he was the real star of season three) is The Mayor, who is officially the greatest villain ever. He is just as wonderful in this as he ever was in the TV series, seeing his outer persona begin to slip as he becomes more and more obsessed with Buffy's death is quite unnerving.
The art is passable, the characters (barely) resembling themselves enough that you can tell who everyone is and such, although having the leads resemble themselves a bit more would have been appreciated. The opening few panels, noticeably the shot of Sunnydale High burning, are fantastic and perhaps because we don't see anyone's faces work perfectly.
All in all, a really good comic for those of us who enjoy the Mayor and a pretty fun story besides that.
4/5
