After: Nineteen Stories of Apocalypse and Dystopia edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling – review

SophieScribe: 'A must read for all dystopian fans!'

What happens after the end of the world as we know it? The included top authors range from Garth Nix (Keys to the Kingdom) to Susan Pfeffer (The World We Live In, The Dead and Gone.) I'd heard of many but was interested to read a few new ones too.

The collection is a really good idea and all the stories are great but a couple favourites have really stuck in my mind:

Faint Heart by Sarah Rees Brennan tells the story of Rosamond, a cloned girl meant to represent the ideal beauty. By tradition, each Rosamond has her suitors compete in a battle to the death for the honour of her marriage. But Roz has a secret, and she's about to turn tradition on its head.

In Reality Girl, by Richard Bowes, we are presented with a future in which the air and rivers are slowly poisoning all those who can't afford protection, and gangs rule the streets. Real, Dare and a group of boys are struggling to survive. Forced to the extreme, they create a diving company, where the boys dive into toxic rivers to catch golden coins thrown by rich tourists, who find it amusing to watch them risk life and limb to get the money. But one day, Real's life is changed forever when a star performer decides to film their work.

I loved this book! The stories covered every emotion - some were sorrowful, others funny and hopeful, others hauntingly terrifying – everyone will find something great in this little book. I've not read many anthologies, so I was pleasantly surprised. The only negative, if it can even be called that, was that they were so, well, short. I often finished wishing for more and will definitely look out for more books by the authors, which I suppose is partly the point. A must read for all dystopian fans!
