Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson – review

lovebooks28: 'I must say it is a very thought-provoking book'

When I first saw this book in the library I was a bit hesitant to read it as the books deals with difficult topics such as eating disorders and self-harming. However I decided to read it and I must say it is a very thought-provoking book. After reading it I think I understand eating disorders more as it deals with mindset of an anorexic.

Lia is in her late teens and after her ex-best friend dies she spirals into a dangerous situation. Lia manages to keep her family thinking she is fine whilst she is eating a lot less, weighing herself and trying to get thinner and thinner. The book follows Lia showing how she copes with her situation and what is going on inside her mind. Lia thinks she is stronger by being thinner and although she has been to rehab twice before the book begins she is still wanting to get thinner. The book describes Lia's emotions heavily and although it is quite upsetting you are always rooting for Lia to overcome her issues.

By the end of the book I felt like I had learned a lot and the way in which Anderson writes makes you feel very close to Lia. I think it's a good book for teenagers to read as you learn a lot about eating disorders and although sometimes I felt really sad I'm glad I finished the book. It is very well written and Anderson has obviously done a lot of research. I would recommend this book to any teenager.

8/10
