Saving June by Hannah Harrington – review

Love John Green? You'll certainly love Hannah Harrigton...

Hannah Harrington's incredible debut novel Saving June is the classic roadtrip book - something happens to spark the need to get away, to grab a friend and a destination and drive. This book satisfies that rule.

Harper's sister, June, killed herself. She left no note, no-one knows why but Harper knows that she needs to save her. June wanted to be in California so Harper needs to get her there.

This is where Jake comes in: June's friend and the guy she tutored. He knows about Harper's plans with her best friend, Laney, and he wants in on them: he has a car and the want to get away. Not only that, he has the music.

This book was stunning, in one word. Satisfying, beautiful, touching, engaging and warm in a few more. I was cautious at first that it would be sad and it was, but it all the right ways. Before long, I was hooked.

All three of these very different characters have their own issues and distinct personalities, their own reason for needing to get away from Michigan to the sunny San Francisco bay. There are characters to love and the odd antagonist to shout at to fulfill all needs.

In Joplin, Jake's beaten-up old van, they embark on the long journey, meeting friends and taking photos all the while, getting ever closer to saving June. My favourite part was the music. I love a book filled with music and playlists so this did not disappoint: if you are a fan of John Green or David Levithan, you'll love Saving June with its sweet romance, great tunes and a purpose to drive towards.
