Big Book of My World by Kali Stileman – review

Sam and Ethan: 'Ethan had a favourite book that he asked for every night without fail...until Big Book of My World arrived in the post'

Ethan had a favourite book that he asked for every night without fail... until Big Book of My World arrived in the post. This is now his first choice when asked to select a book, and he can easily spend half an hour paging through it with me, which for a 20-month-old toddler, is a very long time!

When the book first arrived, I was impressed by the lively colours and the variety of different subjects depicted. I was curious how Ethan would cope with the slightly stylised pictures, but after a day or two of hesitantly pointing to the picture I asked him to show me (with a screwed-up look of "I think this is the right one" on his little face), he is now confidently searching out all the different objects. We are still at the undifferentiated "truck", "car", "digger" stage, and I suspect that as he gets older, the book will help us to become more specific with tow truck, bulldozer, cement mixer and more.

The book covers animals, vegetables, fruit, household items, opposites, colours, the seasons and more besides, so it will be a fantastic way to help build Ethan's vocabulary and concepts for a while to come.
