It is said to be a "gritty, contemporary reboot" of the Spider-Man series in the vein of Christopher Nolan's 2005 reimagining of the caped crusader, Batman Begins. That view would appear to have been confirmed today after the first photograph of actor Andrew Garfield dressed as the superhero was published.

The shot depicts Garfield, who was born in Los Angeles but moved to the UK with his family aged three, as a lean, bloody and brooding figure. Scratchmarks adorn his cheek and a strap sits on his shoulder, suggesting the webslinger may be heading straight from a night fighting crime on the street to high-school lessons.

The new film – which is being directed by 500 Days of Summer's Mark Webb – returns Peter Parker, Spider-Man's alter ego, to his teenage years and will see Gwen Stacy rather than Mary Jane Watson as his romantic interest. Superbad and Easy A star Emma Stone has been cast in the role.

In an interview with the February issue of Details magazine, Garfield said he'd been taking yoga and pilates lessons to get in shape for the role. "I want to feel stronger than I've ever felt, and I want to feel more flexible than I've ever felt," he was quoted as saying. "You don't just want to be a pack of meat – it has to be an open body. It does something to your psyche, and it does something to the way you move. I see it as a massive challenge in many ways ... to make it authentic. To make the character live and breathe in a new way. The audience already has a relationship with many different incarnations of the character."

Garfield, 27, is best known for his supporting role in Oscar-tipped Facebook movie The Social Network. He also appeared in the Terry Gilliam fantasy The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and stars opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan in the forthcoming science fiction adaptation Never Let Me Go. The new, as-yet-untitled Spider-Man film also features Rhys Ifans as the villainous Lizard. Martin Sheen and Sally Field will play Parker's aunt and uncle, Ben and May Parker.

The film began shooting in LA last month and is pencilled in for a July 2012 release date.
