The author and dramatist Sir John Mortimer has died at the age of 85 after a long illness.
Mortimer was best known for creating the character and television series Rumpole of the Bailey. He started his career as a barrister and went on to become one of Britain's most prolific writers, receiving a knighthood in 1998.
His daughter is the actress Emily Mortimer.
The head of BBC radio drama, Alison Hindell, told the BBC: "It's a great loss for the huge circle of his admirers, fans and friends who will always carry Rumpole and the other wonderful works he wrote in their hearts."
