Brian Beutler: US elections 2008: The media's obsession with John McCain's 'honour' has achieved Shakespearian proportions

"I greatly admire John McCain, a man of intelligence, honour and enormous personal and political courage." --Fareed Zakaria, Newsweek, May 5, 2008

"He's an honourable man." --Richard Cohen, Washington Post, April 22, 2008

"[Obama] celebrates communitarian virtues like unity, [McCain] classical virtues like honour." --David Brooks, the New York Times, January 8, 2008

"The honour-bound Senator was nonetheless rattled." --Michael Scherer, Time Magazine, Mar 27, 2008

Friends, Americans, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to mourn Obama, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft dispersed with their fall; So let it be with America. The noble McCain Hath told you Obama was ambitious: If it were so, it was a grievous fault, And grievously hath Obama answer'd it. Here, under leave of McCain and the rest-- For McCain is an honourable man; So are they all, all honourable men-- Come I to speak Obama's concession. He was my choice, faithful and just to me: But McCain says he was ambitious; And McCain is an honourable man. He hath brought many, newly, to the franchise Whose votes did the Obama courters seek: Did this in Obama seem ambitious? When that the poor have cried, Obama hath wept: Ambition should be made of sterner stuff: Yet McCain says he was inexperienced; And McCain is an honourable man. You all did see that on the broadcasts He endured primaries long past victory. And his campaign, he did delay: was this ambition? Yet McCain says he was ambitious; And, sure, he is an honourable man. I speak not to disprove what McCain spoke, But here I am to speak what I do know. You all did love Obama once, not without cause: What cause withholds you then, to vote for him? Perhaps the promise of a century's war The havoc of Mars will rain torrents of blood But McCain is an honourable man. Be it the temptations of untaxed fuel? The climate shall warm and the wealthy cheer. But McCain is an honourable man. Did thine hearts seize at the spectre of socialism? What of the sick and uncared for? No Matter. As McCain is an honourable man. Wherefore else do the wise men speak of his worth? Zakaria, Cohen, Brooks, Scherer, with one voice. Who are they if not honourable men. Who dare not scorn a man of such honour And who pretendeth such boldness as to resist.
