In brief: Frasier’s Niles joins hotly-tipped romcom

Plus: Blake will not face death penalty, and Robert Downey Jr in talks for Dostoevsky adaptation

Two more names have been added to the cast of the highly anticipated romantic comedy Down With Love. Television stars David Hyde Pierce (Niles from Frasier) and Sarah Paulson will play supporting roles opposite Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor. The film is to be produced by Oscar winners Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen, who made their debut with American Beauty. It is their first project since Beauty won its five Oscars.

Robert Blake will not face the death penalty if he is found guilty of murdering his wife, it now appears. The 68-year-old actor was charged on Monday with shooting Bonny Lee Bakley outside a restaurant last May, but prosecutors will now seek a life sentence without parole.

Robert Downey Jr and Kate Hudson look likely to star in Rob Reiner's new drama, Alex and Emma. The film is based on a Dostoevsky short story, The Gambler, and is intended to start shooting in the autumn.
