If you are planning a trip in Britain on a limited budget this book is a must.

The Independent Hostel Guide is packed with fun and affordable places to stay that you don't have to join an association to use.

The book is divided into geographical regions - mainland Europe, England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland - with each section complete with a map that shows the location of the hostels and the relevant page number.

The entries are short and many have been written by the hostel owners, ensuring an insight into the character of the establishment and its proprietor rather than a dry evaluation.

It claims to be "the ultimate reference to the independent hostels of Britain" - and the sections on England, Wales and Scotland back this up with maps peppered with page references. Most of the hostels cost less than £10 a night for a dorm bed, and some are less than £5.

The coverage of Ireland is patchy, but the guide is particularly useful for budget travellers and outdoor enthusiasts, particularly if they holiday in Britain.
