A civics class, Carver High, Omaha; teacher Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick) attempts to engage his students.
"I think we're missing something here," he exclaims. "What are we missing?"
One girl sits bolt upright, her hand thrust into the air.
"Anyone?"
The rest of the class remain inert.
"Tracey..."
"Ethics are rules of conduct, which - "
McAllister begins a voiceover.
"Tracey Flick. Tracey Flick. I'd seen a lot of ambitious students over the years, but Tracey Flick... she was a special case."
Cut to a Carver High Yearbook, open at the index. Beneath Tracey's name are half a page of entries. Her voiceover begins.
"Some say I'm an over-achiever. I think they're just jealous. My mom says I'm different. You know, special. And I think if you looked at the things I've accomplished, you'd have to agree."
In montage, Tracey's involvement in the debating society, business society, and school play flash past. Finally, she appears reporting for Carver High's cable channel.
"... and the littering must stop!"
The smuggest of grins.
"This is Tracey Flick reporting."
